A rather large note about why beard balms / butters go grainy: long story short - keep your beard butter in a cool place.
 it’s normal for beard balms to go grainy because of sudden temperature changes. 

When balms are exposed to warmer temperatures, the butter’s natural fatty acids melt at a different rate than the rest of the fats and waxes in the balm.

You may have noticed that your balm “sweats” when the weather is hot. This causes tiny sweat-like droplets to form on the surface of the balm. When the temperature cools again, these oil droplets recrystallize, causing lighter colored hard grains to form on the surface of the balm.

1. Is my balm ruined when it goes grainy?

Don’t throw away that grainy balm just yet. Although it doesn’t have the ideal texture, it doesn’t mean that it’s not in good condition. You can let those tiny grains melt in your hand before you apply them on your beard. It doesn’t affect the product’s performance in any way. 

2. How can I prevent a grainy balm? 

Since temperature is the major factor affecting your beard balm, you might want to store it in a cool environment. Keep it away from direct sunlight or any source of heat.

3. Is fixing a grainy balm possible? 

Yes, it’s possible. You can re-melt it and flash cool it in your freezer. Once it sets, you can start using it again. However, you might want to take note that most balms contain essential oils or fragrance oils. When you heat the balm to the melting point, there might be a slight change to its smell. 

4. Is there a right way to re-melt your balm? 

You might want to opt for a gentle process when melting natural oils or butter. That said, do not heat it by applying direct heat as this could ruin your balm.

One safer way to do it is to heat up some water to near boiling and remove from heat. Then, place your balm container in a tight Ziploc bag. Submerge the tin (within the Ziploc bag) into the hot water for 15 minutes, or until the balm melts completely. Once everything is melted, put it in your freezer to quickly re-freeze the balm.
